Keep it short and simple
The best first dates are easy to say yes to and easy to end politely.
An hour or two is plenty. You're only trying to answer one question: would I like to see this person again?
Ideas where you can really talk
- Coffee and cake at a vegan café. Daytime, relaxed, and easy to stay longer if you're getting on.
- A food market. Wander, share a few stalls, and let the food start the conversation.
- A walk in a park, a nature reserve or along the coast. Walking side by side makes conversation easy.
- A plant-based cookery class. Something to do together, and something to eat at the end.
- A gallery, exhibition or talk. A relaxed setting, with plenty to talk about afterwards.
- Volunteering together. A community garden or a charity event shows what you both care about. Better for a second or third date.
Who pays?
There's no rule. Some people split it, some take it in turns, and some let whoever asked pay. A quick, light-hearted word about it avoids any awkwardness.
Feel safe and comfortable
- Meet somewhere public, and make your own way there and back.
- Tell a friend where you're going and who you're meeting.
- Keep an eye on your drink.
