Before you go
A little preparation makes the day easier for everyone.
- Ask your partner to mention it in advance, so no one is caught off guard.
- Offer to bring a dish. Something everyone can share takes the pressure off the host.
- Keep expectations relaxed. A host doing their best is worth thanking, even if it's not perfect.
Handling the questions
Curiosity is usually just curiosity.
Relatives may ask where you get your protein, or whether you miss cheese. Answer briefly and with good humour. You don't need to win anyone over in one afternoon.
Big occasions
- Plan ahead. Christmas, birthdays and weddings are easier if you talk about the food beforehand.
- Bring something special. A dish you're proud of is often the one everyone wants the recipe for.
- Focus on the people. The day is about being together, not what's on the plate.
If they're not vegan either
Meeting a non-vegan partner's family is part of the bigger conversation. Read dating someone who isn't vegan.
